Canadian Immigrants: Asked For A Proof Of Recall Clearance Document? Here's How To Get One

by Joan Bradley

If you are immigrating into Canada and want to bring your vehicle along with you, you might have been asked for a proof of recall clearance document. Basically, before you are allowed to bring a car into Canada from another country, you have to ensure that it is safe to operate and that it does not have any manufacturer recalls.

Although you might know that your car is in good shape and that the manufacturer hasn't contacted you about any recalls, you might be unsure of how to prove it to the Canadian government. Luckily, there are a few different ways that you can acquire one of these documents.

Call the Manufacturer

If you contact your vehicle manufacturer and provide the VIN number, the company should be able to pull up important information about your vehicle and ensure that there are not any outstanding recalls. In many cases, you can have the letter mailed, emailed or faxed to you, which will make it easy for you to provide the Canadian government with a copy. Unfortunately, some manufacturers do charge for this service, but the fee should be minimal. To get started with this method, simply call your vehicle manufacturer's main office in your country and ask for details.

Ask Your Dealer

Contact the dealership that you purchased your vehicle from. Your car dealer might be able to provide you with a copy of one of these letters without any issues. If your dealer doesn't have a copy of one of these letters, you might find that it's easier for someone from the dealership to get in contact with your car manufacturer than it would be for you do to it.

Print Out a Car History Report

There are multiple reputable services out there that use your vehicle's VIN number to look up your car history. These websites will often provide information about the types of accidents that your vehicle has been involved in, any applicable recalls and more. In some cases, simply printing out a copy of one of these documents will be enough to satisfy the Canadian government, particularly if there have not been any issues with your car.

As you can see, acquiring proof that your vehicle is safe to operate isn't as tricky as you might think. Follow these tips, and you should be able to get the necessary document so that you can important your car into Canada. For more information, contact an auto registry in Calgary or another Canadian city.
